Puppies First Shots
Who doesn’t like puppies?
They are such adorable, irresistible little bundles of cuteness. But, like any other pet, they require help to maintain their health and avoid diseases. One way to do that, is to protect them by means of vaccinations.
Puppies between 5 to 7 weeks old (some puppies have it between 6 to 8 weeks of age) should get their first shots with boosters given up to 16 weeks old. Of course, this should be done by your vet. Your puppies’ vaccinations will also depend on their health status upon birth, breed, and lifestyle.
So, what are the lists of puppy shots we need to give them?
Here are some vaccinations that your puppy should have during its first year and a half of age:
-
DHLPPC
This combination shot protects your puppies from Distemper, Adenovirus, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Corona, and the most common virus “Parvo”. This is followed by a scheduled shot on: 9-11 weeks old; 12-15 weeks old; 12-16 months old; and every 1-2 years.
-
Bordetella
Also known as Kennel Cough. This vaccine shot is initially given to your puppies and comes in intra-nasal, oral, or injectable.
-
Canine Influenza Virus

It is still best to seek medical advice regarding your puppies’ vaccinations. I’m pretty sure your vet would be glad to assist you. However, giving your puppies the vaccinations, they need can be expensive. Let me give you some ideas on how much a vaccine costs, although prices may vary from its location and may change in time. So, it is recommended to check it first with your clinic for their updated prices.
Vaccinations are important to your puppies; it is their protection against some fatal diseases that can’t be cured. Dog owners are encouraged to take their puppies to the vet to get scheduled vaccinations.
Does it have any side effects after having the vaccines? How do we take care of our puppies after the vaccinations?
Generally, dogs who have undergone vaccinations may feel discomfort or pain in the vaccinated area. It may also vary on your dogs’ reaction with the vaccine itself. Your dog may experience vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, or shortness of breath to name a few. If ever you see any of these side effects after your puppy’s vaccination, just be calm and closely monitor if this will lasts more than 24 hours, if it does, immediately get help from your vet.
However, it is also important to notify your vet if your puppies have had any previous vaccine reactions, this may help your vet to avoid any vaccines that may recur the reactions.
