With June comes pride month for gay and lesbian pet owners! It’s the perfect time to celebrate and grab some rainbow gear for you and your pet.

Pet Owners have Pride

It’s no surprise that LGBTQ+ people love their pets, especially their pups! In fact, a recent survey reveals pet ownership is more than 10% more common among gay respondents than in the general population. Overall, 78.5% of gay and lesbian respondents reported keeping a pet.

Pride month is celebrated annually to honor and support those who identify as LGBTQ+. These celebrations work to achieve equality and spread awareness.

The rainbow symbol, representing diversity, is often worn as tshirts, socks, hats and other fun parade wear.

Rainbow Collars and Leashes

Including your pet in Pride events is often a goal for many LGTBQ+ pet owners. One important part of bringing your pet to a public Pride event is to keep them safe and under control. Pride parades, in particular, are often noisy, chaotic and full of happy throngs of parade goers.

Having a fun, rainbow collar and leash can solve two problems at once; safety and community.

Check out these suggestions:

The Classic Pride Bandana

Bandanas are a popular choice. They look cute on any dog and are pretty easy to put on. Plus, they are a simple way to show pet pride and keep the drool factor neat and tidy. No one wants to hug a slobbery dog at Pride!

Fun Fact!

Fun Fact!

The pride parade wasn’t always just a celebration. In fact, the first ones were protests and riots for the rights of the community. The first protests occurred during August of 1971 in Toronto and Vancouver, demanding to end all discrimination against those who identify as gay or lesbian. Since then the event has flourished into a vibrant, annual festival and parade that honors not just gay and lesbians, but everyone in the LGBTQ2S+ community.

You can also…

  • Volunteer your time to donating to LGBTQ-friendly organizations
  • Become an ally
  • Host/attend an event (ex: A dog walk, pet parade, dog/car wash, etc…)
  • And more!
