IKEA Hamster Cage Ideas
IKEA Hamster cages have become a popular DIY project for many hamster owners. Hamsters need a minimum of 450 square inches and it can be hard to find appropriately sized cages for your hamster to happily live in. These four IKEA hacks/cages are a great alternative to store bought ones and can be fun to create.
We offer the best reviewed products from our Amazon Affiliate links in case you’d like to buy one. There is no cost to you and it helps keep the lights on around here (Thanks!).
Let’s get started…
1. IKEA Detolf Cage
The IKEA Detolf Cage has become a popular DIY project. It is a great size for hamsters, gerbils, and mice. The cage measures roughly 950 square inches of floor space and only costs $69.99, which is a bargain price for its huge size. Turning this display cabinet into a hamster cage isn’t that hard. All you really need to do is construct the cabinet but not add in the shelves or the door. However, you will need to build your own lid or else your hamster may escape. The overall design looks clean and like with any hamster cage you can decorate it in whichever way you like.

2. IKEA Billy Cage for Hamsters
The IKEA Billy cage isn’t as simple to construct as the detolf but is still a nice design. This cage has 434 sq inches of floor space, which unfortunately is a little under the minimum of 450 square inches. In order to reach the appropriate amount of space you will need to buy two (extension) shelves and remove the central wall. Removing the two walls is pretty easy. You can seal the cage together with the same silicone you used for the glass at no extra cost.

3. IKEA Kallax Hamster Cages
The Kallax hamster cage is another fun DIY project to make. It’s definitely one of the more complicated designs but it really pays off when your done. An advantage in getting this shelf is the fact that you also get storage space for your supplies and bedding. This way you’re able to store things all convenient location. That being said, you don’t have to save a couple squares for storage, you can just make the whole shelf into a cage. You really have a lot of freedom when mapping out this design.
The Kallax comes in a variety of different sizes (click here), so you can choose which one suits your home/preferences the best.

4. IKEA Linnmon Hamster Cage
The Linnmon hamster cage provides plenty of space for your hamster to roam around. It is above the cage size requirements with 877 square inches and looks nice in any home. It is mostly made of wood but has a glass front to provide a viewing space. Although, it requires more construction than some other cages. It may look like there are many things you’ll have to buy, however, the overall cost is about the same price as one of those (unacceptably) small cages they sell at pet stores.
